1981 Faith Ringgold "Save Our Children in Atlanta" Rare Poster

$750.00

This Poster was self published by Faith Ringgold during the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981.

“…The poster includes photos of Ringgold’s sculptural work, Atlanta Children, along with the listed names of the slain children and young adults, all of whom were Black, including their ages ranging from 7 to 23. The poster also reprints Ringgold’s small handwriting: “May 15, 1981 the 708th day of terror in Atlanta, Georgia.”

Exactly one week later, on May 22, 1981, police would stop and question Wayne Williams; a month later, they would charge him with two of the murders. Williams, a Black Atlantan, was never charged with the other 26 murders, and evidence from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and investigative reporting suggests that local Ku Klux Klan members may have committed some of the murders in an attempt to incite a race war in Atlanta…The cases were reopened in 2019, but there have been little public developments as of this writing. The murders would also be the subject of James Baldwin’s 1985 book, The Evidence of Things Not Seen.

An extraordinarily powerful work by a groundbreaking Black artist, working through this moment of incredible racial violence and tragedy. OCLC locates no examples as of April 2024, though we have found one at the Smithsonian and another at the University of Maryland…” (quoted from Fugitivematerials.com).
